Akismet: July Stats Roundup

This post is part of a monthly series summarizing some stats and figures from the Akismet universe. Feel free to browse all of the posts in the series.

In July, Akismet saw 5,608,437,500 pieces of spam come through. If each piece of spam were a book, there would be enough books to fill 156 Libraries of Congress (the largest library in the world).

There was a small increase in spam numbers since June – about 5%, but a 71% increase from last year in July. That’s about the same yearly increase as the one was saw in last month.

We also saw 310,275,000 legitimate comments made, which makes up only 5% of the total comments we see going around. If each real comment were a book, there would enough to fill only 8 Libraries of Congress (still not bad!).

Our busiest day was July 8 with about 240 million pieces of spam, and our slowest day was 6 with 133 million comments. Not a big range.

Overall, we missed only about 0.0206% of all spam comments this month. Although there weren’t any big fluctuations in our missed spam numbers this month, your missed spam numbers may be different. If you’re seeing more missed spam than usual come through, please do contact us and we’ll be happy to help 🙂.

Here’s how much spam and ham came through each day of the month:

This month we did not have any service interruptions. You are welcome to follow us on Twitter or this blog for updates on that.

Here are some interesting articles on spam from around the web we liked this month:

Get More Traffic With WordPress RSS Feeds and Podcasts

What is Podcasting

The word “podcasting” was a buzzword with the techie crowd in the early days.  You may have heard of it but not really understood what is was for.

So what is podcasting, anyway?

Podcasting is online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed.

Think of it as radio on demand except you get to download and KEEP the song when you tune in.   Listening to a Podcast gives the listener a tone of options for consuming the content, far more than just listening to a radio station.  When a listener subscribers to a Podcast, they are the ones that determine the time and the place they want to listen, meaning they decide what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it.

Listeners can retain audio archives to listen to at their leisure.

While blogs have turned many bloggers into journalists, podcasting has the potential to turn podcasters into radio personalities.  Plus it can be used for a ton marketing and traffic generation purposes.  Here are some simple examples:

  1. Daily/Weekly/Monthly Informational content
  2. Music – Band promotional clips and interviews.
  3. Talk Shows – Industry or organizational news, investor news, sportscasts, news coverage and commentaries.
  4. Training Series – Instructional informational materials.
  5. Story – Story telling for children or the visually-impaired.

Podcasting is the syndication of audio files using RSS feeds.  It works the same as a standard RSS feed reader or news aggregator, the only difference is that the feed you subscribe to contains an audio file in it.   The best part is that WordPress does all the work.

Watch this video and you’ll learn what an RSS Feed is, how it gets created in WordPress and more importantly how you can use Podcasts to generate traffic without your Blog!

WordPress Theme Customization Tricks

Your WordPress Theme or Framework likely includes a number of areas that can be “tweaked” by the Administrator.  These areas are usually managed via separate menus in the WordPress Dashboard.

In most cases you’ll be able to make the changes you want to your site through the standard addition of “Widgets” that add content features to your site.  But for the time that this basic editing of the WordPress theme you are using isn’t enough WordPress provide you with access to edit the core theme files.

This video covers this aspect of managing your WordPress Blog.

How To Organize Your WordPress Blog With Categories

Categories make it easy to direct the flow of your Blog and focus on key posts.

Duration: 15 Minute Screen Capture

Description: Organize your WordPress Blog with categories.  There’s a number of special considerations when using WordPress Categories that revolve around assigning multiple categories to individual posts.

There’s also a limit to the number of categories that you add and how deeply they are nested.  The easiest way to make the best use of the WordPress category function is to spend time BEFORE you add content mapping out the flow you want your visitors to take as they consume your information.

Structure your content first, then assign the content to a corresponding category.  Here are some things to think about while you’re organizing your posts:

  1. Do I want flat categories or nested categories?
  2. Am I linking menus to categories that are nested or flat?
  3. Do I want my listings of individual posts from nested categories to be displayed in the root category blog?

WordPress Widgets Tips and Tricks

What the heck is a widget I can hear you ask???

Well once you know, you’ll wonder how you blogged without them using WordPress.

We’ve covered a number of odd names in your WordPress Blog, Posts, Pages, Plugins, Themes and Now Widgets!  I like to thing of a widget as an “Post it note” for Blogs.

A widget gives you the opportunity to place a select amount of specific data taken from somewhere else and “place” it on your Blogs screen.  It doesn’t take up the entire page, like a “post it” it acts like a reminder or links to additional data.

What this quick WordPress Video and you’ll see how easy they are to use and more importantly some great ideas on how to use Widgets on your WordPress Blog.

How To Create and Place WordPress Menus

A well structured Blog Menu means the difference between giving your visitors a detailed map or asking them to discover all your information for themselves.

A WordPress Menu is a powerful tool if used correctly.

Description: This WordPress video tutorial goes over the creation of WordPress menus and more importantly how to display the multiple menus in various locations in your WordPress powered Blog.

Each WordPress theme includes one or more locations for menus to be placed.   Depending on which theme you have active on your site you may be limited….

If you’re stuck we’ve got additional plugins that will allow you to display a menu as a widget in selected sidebars.  Placing what ever menu you have widgets, removes the themes menu limits. You should definitely watch this session twice, the first time to get an understanding of how menus work and a second time after you’ve written down some ideas for menu links and locations on your site.

How To Paste Content Into A WordPress Post

… Without having a bunch of messy HTML code make the post look completely different than the rest of your WordPress Blog!

If you have found a quote or additional content on another site that you want to include on your WordPress Blog the regular “cutting and pasting” approach won’t work.

Because when you copy and paste from a Word Document, email, PDF or another web site the content you paste often includes a tone of HTML code.  The result is different fonts, font colors, sizes, images not showing up and irregular spacing.

This video shows you the right way to paste content into your WordPress Blog posts and pages.
